American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society, being located in Atlanta, Georgia, is a national health organization which consists of volunteers who have given themselves to seeking the solution to cancer. The also promote educational programs, act as health advocates, and provide many needed service. Volunteers aid in helping the society provide needed research that they hope one day will eradicate cancer forever.
There are more than two million volunteers helping the American Cancer Society function as an agency for change and education. This nonprofit agency has raised billions of dollars to aid them in promoting research and education. Second only to the Federal Government, the American Cancer Society spends huge sums of money each year for research. In fact, the Society has helped forty Noble Prize winners early in their research careers. I don’t know about you but that’s pretty impressive.
One of the main purposes of the American Cancer society, besides funding research, is promoting education. Because its members know that education save lives, they feel it is imperative to get the word out about cancer prevention. Educational programs explain that a healthy lifestyle is one of the best weapons for cancer prevention. People learn that certain lifestyle changes can make a difference whenever the changes are made. People need to stop smoking, be more active, eat a healthy diet, and stay out of the sun.
Because early detection is imperative with cancer, the Society provides information about screening procedures and the most recent cancer resources available to the public and health professionals.
Because cancer affects both the patient and the family, the American Cancer Society provides services to everyone touched by the scourge of cancer. The also provide accommodations for family members who are staying with patients undergoing treatments.
Advocacy is one of the major duties of the society. Contrary to popular belief, cancer is political because the Society has to constantly fight for funding from the Federal Government. The work with politicians to strengthen our laws to help people benefit from new treatments, help people with no insurance obtain treatment, and to help with cancer’s victims’ quality of life. This in itself is a full time job because of its importance.
The American Cancer Society has made its goal to stop cancer and to help those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Prevention, cures, and education all are some of the services provided by this volunteer organization.
